Some of these are quite large, so I'd only try and download them with a high-speed connection.
Mars '04 has come and gone and Germs contaminated the whole thing
both the tournament and Erin, who played despite her coughing up a
lung and sounding like a chain smoking truck stop waitress.
The weekend was hot and humid but thanks to our large numbers and
shade (thanks Doug!), we were able to hang tough. The pool and air
conditioning at the hotel helped as well though we did miss the
lovely amenities at the campsite. The Royal Flush porta-potties were
hummin' by Sunday!
The Mars format is cool 2 days of 3 games each to determine your
seeding for the playoffs on Monday. It was especially nice to go to
a tournament and not have to play Vitamin I.
Friday night it seemed everyone finally showed up by 11:00, and we
immediately began giving room 320 the rock star treatment. It didn't
take long to get into the spirit of the weekend by throwing anything
that wasn't nailed down at the walls, and it eventually degraded
into tossing things out the window. Unfortunately no one got hurt,
and Doug signaled the end by getting naked and climbing into bed.
The rumors were true; we had games to play the next morning.
Through a terrible bout of miscommunication, a core of our team
somehow didn't make it to the fields on time. It may have had
something to do with the fact that they had no clue where the fields
were, and the other half of the team figured, "they are adults,
they'll get there," were good enough directions. By 10:00 however,
everyone was there and we were ready to go.
Saturday Game 1: Germs vs. Smothered Snakes (Score: 12-15) Evenly
matched teams on the field, except for the "pick" girl. There was
simply no way our team could keep up with her number of pick calls.
First game of the tournament, and both teams were feeling each other
out and trying to find their groove. The Snakes found theirs first
and took the last 3 points of the game to win.
Game 2: Germs vs. Duck X-ing (Score: 5-15) Made up of a bunch of
Carleton alumni and other great mid-west players, these guys and
gals came onto the field flowing in orange and apparently oblivious
to the concept of start times. Our first encounter with them was a
crude form of dodgeball they challenged us to, which was followed by
them boat racing against a team from Virginia for the ultimate
services of a comely lass. Duck X-ing was good, and they certainly
flaunted it. The highlight of this game was the pure disgust and
disdain they showed for us when we explained what an "upper decker"
was, and then our on-the-fly invention of the "depth charge" which
sadly no one performed in their coolers. That and Cleary's 15 step
travel, which wasn't called.
Game 3: Germs vs. Ponn Far (Score: 15-14) Last game of the day was
another even matched affair. In the hot, sticky sun, we traded
points back and forth for awhile, got down at one point, but put it
together and made a run, thanks to Cline's sideline intensity and
Todd stepping it up on defense in the last 3 points of the game. A
strong win for us to take away and leave on a high note. Everyone
was doubly excited to realize nothing stood in our way of the hotel
pool at this point other than a distinct lack of beer. Something we
quickly remedied on the ride back. Nothing like 30 packs of PBR and
PBR Light, followed by a classy choice of Schlitz the beer
with "just a kiss of hops."
Poolside we realized something
pizza would make a nice side to the
beer we were consuming, so Pat took control and ordered just over
half a pizza for everyone and there might have been 4 slices left by
the end of the night. We spent the next few hours or so sitting
outside, and acting as entertainment to the peepers sitting in their
hotel rooms.
Sunday Game 1: Germs vs. Blah (Score: 9-15) Blah, blah, blah. And
that's about it. Team comprised of Notre Damers primarily
they moved
the disc quickly and threw a spread offense against us which we
really weren't ready for. And they loved to Blah
Game 2: Germs vs. Fuct (Score: 15-13) This might have been our best
game of the weekend even though we started slow and were down 8-4 at
the half. The core of this team were a bunch of male hardbodies from
Salsbury U. They had speed, some height and abs that just wouldn't
quit. Biddle made me write that last part. Hard fought game that
could have gone either way, a number of different times. By half
time we decided to get fired up, got the sidelines involved and
slapped a zone on that made them make that one extra throw. I
wouldn't necessarily call them patient. We tied it up and then took
the lead but they came back to tie the score at 12-12. But somehow
we dug deeper and scored two in a row to win.
Game 3: Germs vs. Nasty (score 9-15) Our seeding before this game
was 24th / 25th with Nasty being seeded 1 spot above us. We knew
this was going to be a tight game. The weather started to get ugly
right as we lined up for the pull and I think I saw the Wicked Witch
of the West at one point fly by. Ask McClintock, she's apparently
part witch. We got some pretty hard rain for the first few points,
which resulted in lots of turnovers. The disc often went right
through the receiver's hands both for us and Nasty. After about 4
points, the rain stopped and it got nice again. For some reason,
that seemed to help Nasty more than us and we fell behind 8-4 at the
half and never really recovered. Nasty did a lot of what we want to
do they kept the disc moving at all times. They would look up field
and if nothing was there, they would move the disc by doing the
dump / swing. If we take one lesson away from this weekend, it is
that we have to move the disc faster and not give the defense any
time to set up.
Monday - The final seeding from our first six games put us at 27th
out of 36 teams.
Game 1: Germs vs. BoP (Score: 12-13) This was the hardest game to
get up fired up about. All the Germs were tired, sore and thinking
about the drive home. Erin played one point and then turned into a
pile of goo. BoP played a split stack and after a short bit, the
Germs adjusted and we traded points for most of the game. Our
biggest issue was not adjusting our throws to the overall slower
speed that everyone was moving on Monday. Throws that people could
run down on Sunday were just a bit too long on Monday. Also, because
we were tired, we tended to try to score with the deep throw quickly
and not work the disc down the field. One bight spot was our play
against their zone. We moved the disc and ran the hell out of the
defense, which opened everything up. After just a few points of
trying zone, BoP had enough and went back to person. This loss was
hard to take as we should have beaten this team. The next time we
see them, the results will be quite different. Of course there were
mixed emotions with this loss, since that meant we didn¹t have to
play another game and could start our 5 hour drive home at 12
instead of 2 or 4pm.
Summary: Damn that was fun. Let¹s do it again next year! Overall,
Germ Circus is looking better as the year moves on. There was a lot
of improvement at Mars as we are now starting to function as a team.
People are using the dump more often than not, which is great.
Moving forward, we have to make sure that we always have the dump
and really work the swing / continue cut. Communication on the field
is important, and getting rid of the disc as soon as we can is
something to work on.
Everyone made a huge contribution to the weekend both on and off
the field, and it was cool to witness and play with that.
