What a great start to the year! The weather reports all week were less than encouraging. They even threw the rarely-used 90% chance of rain around. It threatened to rain on Saturday but only gave us a few light drops and as the sun came out, it turned out to be a great day.
Sunday was much cooler and things got off to a slow start. No ultimate time my ass since Clayton didn't show up until at least 15 minutes until after the round was supposed to start.
We came in ranked 10th and finished 7/8th for the weekend. We had fun and did well - can't ask for much more than that for the weekend.
Other highlights:
Saturday:
B+: Win 10-7
Best win of the weekend! Despite only a few minutes of warming up, we came out playing mostly mistake free ultimate. The same can not be said for B+, who dropped a few discs early. B+ decided to throw a zone and we were patient and worked the disc until we scored. We kept it up and scored the first 5 points. After that we traded points and took the half 7-3. B+ picked it up in the second half but we held on for the win. B+ was a National-caliber team last year. Enough said.
Generics: Win 10-5
Feeling good about our win over B+, we went into this game relaxed, which could have been an issue but wasn't. We came out and played fine. Of course, Jimmy took up a collection for beer about half time and showed up with plenty just in time for our bye.
First BYE:
Can you say MILK? Can you say beer in hand? Oh yea, we did manage to run on the field between almost every point to get at least a taste of milk. We even managed to suck in some of the DB players for a bit. And most of all, we pissed off all the teams that were playing on our MILK fields.
Nasty: Lost 8-9
The game of milk and the beer in hand didn't seem to slow us too much for this game. We did give up the first two points but then came back and started trading points. The wind had picked up and there were quite a few turnovers. We were losing 7-8 when the cap went on and just managed to tie the game as the second horn blew. We had a chance to win but just couldn't get the disc in the end zone. Germ In Absentia Jared was a monster on the last point, getting both the D and the score to
Second BYE:
So we were 2-1 for pool play and with the tiebreakers, we ended up second in our pool behind B+. The reward for this great play was that our next game was playing against the #1 seed - Annapolis All Stars in quarterfinals.
The second bye was much mellower than the first. Evan napped, we tried to throw pistachio shells in Evan's mouth, and people wandered off to watch some of the open teams play.
Annapolis All Stars: Lost 3-15
By this point in the day, the Germ ladies were hurting. Flav was done after pulling her hamstring and the flu caught up with Adrienne, so we were down to 3 brave ladies - Bridget, Sara and Marie. We talked Annapolis into playing 5-2, which they promptly got bitter about. The game was painful both in the score and playing Annapolis. At least no one on our team yelled at another player to "BE A MAN!" when they felt that not enough effort was given.
Sunday:
Nomads for Rage: Lost 15-8 (?)
We started to play DB, but Sheriff Clayton showed up and reset the brackets to how he had them originally. The 3 host teams combined all into one team (or at least poached the good players off each team) to form the Nomads for day 2. Nomads were fast and did a lot of up the line cuts right after the throw. We got much better at stopping that as the game went on but much of the damage was done. The wind was gusty and throwing towards one side of the field caused lots of floating discs. That combined with a bunch of drops lead to us not being able to do as well as I think we could have.
B+
Ok, neither team was excited to play but we decided to play a game to 7. After 2 "serious" points, hammers became the theme of the game. The motto was when in doubt, through a hammer. Of course, Cleary got fancy and started the in-between the legs and other fun stuff. Nothing like freestyle spinning the pull on your finger while you walk up the filed. At one point, B+ was telling us to toss the disc to Cleary to see what he would do. Between that and Bridget's monkey defense, the game was a fun way to end the weekend.
