2006 Beth Coltman Memorial Tournament
Henlopen State Park -- Henlopen, DE -- 4.29.06 - 4.30.06
Recap
First, the bad news. Nothing official yet, but Coyne seriously injured his
knee in our game against DB. Unfortunately, we can't blame anyone except Coyne
who was guarding the dump vigorously when the injury happened. He's going through
a bunch of tests, but torn MCL was the early guess.
Now the good. Beach houses are the way to do a tournament. Frentzel's place
was fabulous, and aside from some slightly stale odors in the hot tub (easily
fixed with foam-inducing Pantene shampoo), couldn't have been better.
It was extremely windy all weekend and most teams struggled with it, including
us. We were seeded 3rd in our pool, 6th overall.
Saturday:
- G1 - Lost to 1/2 of Annapolis All Stars fairly easily. Afterwards we got
to vote off 2 of the players to the other half of AAS.
- G2 - Lost 9-7 to DB. Almost a carbon copy of the scrimmage. They took half
7-2, we score 4 straight after half to make things interesting.
- G3 - Lost to BRDM 9-6. Came out flat and let them go up 3-0 on us. We quickly
erased the lead and it was nip & tuck until they scored the last 3 points.
This was really the only disappointing game of the weekend. We killed these
guys at Regionals, but we flat-out beat ourselves in this one. Lots of drops
and rushed throws, especially right after getting a turn.
Sunday:
- G1 - Beat Running With Scissors (new Philly co-ed team) 15-1 We actually
got a decent night's sleep, which seemed to help. RWS scored the first one,
then we got the next 15. We had really good flow and our women were strong.
Pretzel was cut and Kristen put on probation after scoring the winning point.
Why? Well, our mascot (Dallas in the PBR costume) was on the field and was
supposed to get the disc for the point. I hate Snack Bar.
- G2 - Another AAS matchup. Another not-close loss.
- G3 - Forfeit win over BRDM. Then we were supposed to have a consolation
game against BRDM on Sunday, but they never bothered to report their score
after losing to Animal and had no idea they had another game. Half their team
had left, and the other half had de-cleated and re-sandaled. They were apologetic,
and offered us watermelon as a peace offering. Unfortunately I hate watermelon
and would have rather had the sweet juice of revenge running down my chin.
At least there were some good deals at the Nike & Banana Republic outlets.
That's the recap. Lots of positive signs, but also a lot of room for improvement.
We have some new faces, so it's going to take time to gel. Our women are ridiculously
strong (even without Marie & Cat), so we have to maximize that advantage
we'll have over most teams.
Next up? Bell Crack 2 weeks from Saturday. Talk of a Media Bar Crawl the Saturday
night of that weekend is getting louder. And more ornery by the minute.
