After a *lot* of shaving Friday night, we were able to sleep in a bit, since we had a first-round bye. Saturday was some of the windies weather I've ever seen and we definitely didn't handle it as well as we could have. The wind on Sunday was a little bit better, but our game was a LOT better.
Game 1: GC 10 - Jug Handle 9
We were down in the second half before putting on a serious run to edge out a good Jug Handle (NJ) team.
Game 2: GC 9 - Your Mom 11
Yikes. I missed most of the second half doing house stuff, and I'm probably glad I did. This is a team that we should not lose to, but whether it was the wind, a letdown after a tough first game, or the constant stroking of our mustaches, we never got things going consistantly. And thus, our bid to Regionals would be in doubt for the rest of the weekend.
Game 3: GC 13 - Lafayette 4
A much-needed easy win.
Game 4: GC 8 - Matt Pippin 13
We played OK, but Matt Pippin was a much more consistent and sure-handed team. A win would have put us in the top 4 for Sunday and a guaranteed spot at Regionals, but instead we would need to play our way into one of the 2 remaining spots.
Game 5: GC 11 - Muff 'n Men 7
I was a little nervous going into this game since a loss would mean no Regionals for us. And MnM had beaten Delmarvelous on Saturday, so they were no pushover. But as mentioned previously, the wind wasn't as severe. And we played much, much better. We took control of this game early (7-3 at half, maybe), and cruised to a win. MnM put on a minor run in the second half, but we were able to trade points until the cap went on.
Game 6: GC 13 - Fission 4
We had a bye before this and some of us spent most of it watching the MnM/YM game and trying to figure out what we were rooting for (it changed durnig the game) much to the annoyance of those who hate trying to figure that stuff out. If the MnM/YM game had been closer, then we would've clinched a bid regardless of this game, but it wasn't. So it came down to us vs. Fission. Win and we're in, lose and we're out. And Fission had the jewfroed kid from Messiah who almost busted us out of Regionals last year. Luckily for us Fission had already clinched a bid. So despite their claims of not rolling over for us, they clearly did not play with a sense of urgency. We played, if not flawlessly, at least our least flawfully game of the weekend and won going away.
So, for the second year in a row, a close loss on Saturday has left us fighting for our Regional lives on Sunday. and for the second year in a row, we pulled it out. Onto Regionals!
